TOWNLEY AND BRADBY: ABIDE
interventions and performances to re-enchant idle sites of Ipswich

30 September – 11 November 2006

During the summer of 2006, Townley and Bradby occupied idle plots of land in Ipswich.
Having witnessed the particular routine at each of these overlooked places, Townley and Bradby intervened in some way, usually with the help of passers-by. These interventions - Public Viewpoint, Buddleia Tennis, Accelerated Drawing, and The Great Cone Game – released a cloud of potential uses for each site, which in turn formed the basis of this show.

Townley and Bradby’s work questions productivity and idleness. They are interested in the notions of wasting time and wasteland and reflect on the way a town's ceaseless change exhausts some areas even as it revives others.

In 2006 Townley and Bradby were on the Arts Council England, East Escalator scheme
which aims to find, support and invest in regionally-based artists, and attract new talent
to the region, enabling them to realise their potential to produce high quality professional work.
